What You Actually Need to Set Up a New Business in India

Most people starting a small business in India spend weeks worrying about paperwork that turns out to be simple, and almost no time on the digital side, which is exactly where customers will actually judge them. Here's what genuinely matters at the start, in the order it usually needs to happen.

The registration side, which is smaller than you think

For most small and micro businesses, Udyam registration is the first real step. It's free, done entirely online through the government's own portal, and takes maybe fifteen minutes if you have your Aadhaar and PAN ready. It gives you an official Udyam number that proves your business exists on record, which matters later for loans, government schemes, and even just looking legitimate to a bigger client or a landlord.

A current account in the business's name comes next, since mixing business money with a personal account gets messy fast, especially once you're paying suppliers or staff. GST registration is only actually required once your turnover crosses the threshold for your state and business type, so don't let anyone talk you into registering for it on day one if you're not there yet. It adds filing work you don't need until the business has grown enough to justify it.

The paperwork checklist, realistically
Udyam registration, a business bank account, and GST only once you cross the turnover threshold. That's genuinely most of it for a small service business.

The part that actually decides whether customers come back

This is where most new businesses underinvest. Having a shop or a clinic or a salon is only half the job. The other half is how a customer actually reaches you, how they find out you exist, and what happens the first time they try to book, order, or just ask a question.

  • A number customers can reach you on that they already know how to use, which for almost everyone in India means WhatsApp
  • Some way to handle queues, bookings or orders that isn't a notebook or a shouted name across the room, once you're busy enough that this starts breaking down
  • A simple web presence, even a single page, that shows what you do and lets someone get in touch without calling first

None of this needs to be expensive or complicated on day one. It needs to exist, and it needs to actually work the first time someone tries it, because a new customer who has a bad first experience with your booking process rarely comes back to try again.

Where ZiroWait fits into this

This is the exact gap ZiroWait was built to close. If your business is a clinic, salon, restaurant, garage or service center, the platform already gives you a working WhatsApp queue, appointment booking, and, for restaurants, QR code table ordering, running on your own WhatsApp number or a shared one while you're getting started, along with a dashboard to run all of it. You can be live the same day you sign up, without writing a single line of code or hiring anyone to build it for you.

And if your business doesn't fit neatly into those categories, or you need something more specific to how you actually work, that's the other half of what we do. We build custom WhatsApp bots and custom software on the same underlying platform, for businesses that need something the standard product doesn't cover. If you're not sure which of the two applies to you, the product page is the fastest way to find out, or you can just tell us what you need directly and we'll tell you honestly whether it's a fit.
